River crewing services in Europe
Keep your cargo operations moving with crew employed by RAM. We supply boatmasters, helmsmen, deck crew, mechanics and electricians for long-term assignments, temporary cover and planned rotations on European inland waterways.
Crew employed by RAM
A crewing partner for your freight operation
River transport depends on the right people being ready for the vessel, the route and the next crew change. RAM provides employed personnel to support your onboard crewing requirements, with the assignment and responsibilities agreed directly with your organisation.
Your enquiry can cover one replacement, several onboard positions or a recurring rotation plan. We discuss the required experience, working language, documents, joining location and duration before proposing a crew arrangement.
Long-term crew support
Plan personnel for continuing operational requirements. Define the roles, rotation pattern and expected duration so crew continuity can be built into the assignment.
Temporary & relief crew
Cover a defined period, planned leave or a gap between rotations. Share the joining deadline and essential qualifications so we can assess a suitable replacement.
Fleet & rotation planning
Coordinate requirements across several vessels. Agree joining ports, handover windows and role requirements for each assignment rather than treating every vessel as identical.

Crew roles for inland cargo vessels
Tell us the official onboard function and required qualification level. Job titles can differ between countries; the proposed crew member must match the actual role and applicable vessel requirements.
Captains / boatmasters
Personnel for vessel command and navigation responsibilities. Specify the waterway, vessel or convoy type and any route-specific authorisations, radar requirements or operating restrictions.
Helmsmen
Helmsmen for the operational duties assigned within the vessel’s crew. Include the required qualification, navigation experience, working language and watch arrangement.
Boatmen & deck crew
Deck personnel for the functions required by your operation, including mooring, deck work and support for cargo-related activities. State the recognised crew grade and relevant vessel experience.
Mechanics / engine personnel
Technical personnel for the machinery duties agreed for the assignment. Share engine and auxiliary equipment details, maintenance responsibilities and the required onboard experience.
Marine electricians
Electrical personnel for agreed onboard electrical duties. Identify the systems involved, operating environment and competence requirements, including any vessel-specific training.
European inland waterways
Start with the vessel and route
We welcome crew enquiries for cargo operations on the Rhine, Danube, Main, Moselle and connected European inland waterways. Tell us the actual route and operating countries so we can assess the assignment against its requirements.
For dry cargo vessels, inland container vessels, pushers or barges, include the vessel configuration and operating pattern. Tanker and dangerous-goods assignments require the applicable additional qualifications and a separate review before acceptance.
Information that shapes the crew plan
- Vessel type, flag, dimensions and convoy configuration where relevant.
- Trading area, waterways, joining port and expected itinerary.
- Required crew composition and onboard function for each person.
- Working language, watches, rotation pattern and handover window.
- Specific operational, cargo or equipment requirements.
A practical qualification review
Match the documents to the assignment
Before mobilisation, the proposed personnel and documents are reviewed against the agreed function, vessel and route. A general job title alone is not enough to establish suitability for an inland navigation role.
Professional qualifications
Relevant inland navigation certificates or recognised qualifications, experience and service records for the function. Requirements are assessed separately for navigation, deck and technical roles.
Route & operational requirements
Applicable specific authorisations and training, such as radar or stretches with specific navigation risks. Cargo, vessel and convoy requirements are included where relevant.
Joining readiness
Identity, medical fitness evidence where required, certificate validity, working language and travel arrangements. The joining plan includes the location, contact person and handover details.
Qualification framework: Directive (EU) 2017/2397. Qualification recognition and minimum manning are distinct matters; applicable flag, waterway and national requirements must also be checked for the assignment.

River crewing: questions from operators
Are the crew employed by RAM?
Yes. This service supplies personnel employed through RAM. The employing entity and contractual arrangements are confirmed for the assignment. It is not recruitment for direct employment by the shipowner.
Can we request permanent and temporary crew support?
Yes. We discuss long-term operational requirements as well as temporary assignments, relief cover and recurring rotations. Duration, availability and the assignment terms are agreed before mobilisation.
Can you provide one person or several onboard roles?
Both types of enquiry are welcome. Send the positions and numbers required. Any proposed crew composition must meet the vessel’s applicable manning requirements; availability is confirmed for each role.
Do you supply hotel or hospitality personnel?
No. This river crewing service is focused on navigation, deck and technical personnel for cargo transport vessels. Hotel and hospitality staffing is outside this service.
Is river crewing the same as a riding squad?
No. River crewing concerns onboard crew requirements for cargo operations. A riding squad is a technical team assigned to defined repair or maintenance work. See our riding squad service for that requirement.
How quickly can a crew member join?
Timing depends on availability, qualification checks, the joining location and travel arrangements. Include the latest acceptable joining date in your enquiry. RAM confirms a realistic mobilisation plan rather than promising a fixed turnaround for every vessel.
Plan the next crew change
Tell us which crew your vessel needs
