Piping work packages connect design information, materials, fabrication and site installation. A list of pipefitters or welders is only one part of the requirement. The package must explain what is to be built, where the boundaries sit and how the client will inspect and accept the work.
A clear package improves planning, reduces interface disputes and gives the team a traceable route from drawing to handover. The approved project documents and responsible technical personnel always govern the actual installation.
Identify the systems, lines, modules or areas included in the package. List the governing drawings, specifications and revision status. Mark the physical tie-in points and describe any work by others that must be complete first.
State exclusions explicitly. Supports, insulation, coatings, valves, instruments, testing and reinstatement are often assumed rather than assigned. A responsibility matrix prevents gaps.
Confirm that issued drawings and models contain enough information for the planned stage. Fabrication needs dimensions, materials, joint details and component identification. Installation also needs location, orientation, supports, access and coordination with surrounding systems.
Define how the team raises technical questions and how revised information is issued. Never rely on uncontrolled screenshots or verbal changes for production work.
Create a material list linked to the package. Confirm who purchases, receives, stores and issues pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, supports and consumables. Identify items that need traceability and the records that must follow them through fabrication.
Inspect deliveries against the agreed requirements before they reach the work front. Quarantine damaged, unidentified or incorrect items so they cannot be installed by mistake.
Define what will be prefabricated in a workshop and what will be fitted on site. Agree dimensional checks, spool identification, protection of prepared ends and transport arrangements. The receiving team should know the status of every spool.
For site installation, confirm lifting, temporary support, access and alignment responsibilities. Work in existing facilities may also require controlled isolations, surveys and field verification before cutting or connection.
Assign the interface between fit-up and welding. State who confirms joint preparation, alignment and release for welding. Link the production record to the correct joint, procedure and qualified personnel where required by the project.
Changes to material, dimension or joint configuration must be reviewed by the responsible technical personnel. A convenient site solution is not automatically an approved solution.
Define notification points, required inspections and acceptance criteria before production. Identify who prepares inspection requests and who records the result. The team should know which stages cannot be covered or progressed without release.
Testing requires a specific plan covering boundaries, temporary items, instruments, safety controls, medium, pressure, duration and acceptance. The approved test package and site procedures determine execution.
Record field changes, revised drawings and approved deviations. Update weld maps, spool records and completion status so the handover matches the installed condition. Keep superseded information distinguishable.
Separate incomplete physical work from missing documents and items awaiting a client decision. Give each open point a location, owner and next action.
Agree the final package before the first spool is fabricated. It may include an index, approved drawings, material records, weld and inspection information, test reports, non-conformity close-out and an open-point list. Requirements vary by project; collect only what the contract requires, but keep it traceable.
At minimum, it should define scope, drawings, boundaries, materials, responsibilities, work sequence, inspection and testing requirements, acceptance and handover evidence.
The stages use different information, equipment and controls. Separating them makes dimensional checks, transport status and site interfaces easier to manage.
Before production starts. This allows records to be captured at the correct stage instead of reconstructed after the work is hidden or complete.
